“One of the things we love to do is creep up on the pilots training in the simulator once they’ve been in there a while. It’s so realistic they lose all sense of where they are and the mind tricks them into believing they are really flying. They’ll be hovering at 1000 feet and then i’ll walk out in front of them, gives them the biggest shock!”

And so began my day working with the crew and engineers at one of Babcock’s aviation facilities.

After the simulator I needed two bits of luck, a classic British summer’s day with blue skies and white fluffy clouds and for no one to need the services of the air ambulance crew. The biggest consideration on the day was setting the lighting and camera kit up in such a way that it could be removed in seconds just in case a call came in and they had to go. Fortunately the weather was perfect and no one needed the ambulance for the time they were with us. Unfortunately 15 minutes after we finished a call came in and the crew were scrambling for real…
